Is there a way of setting the background mask to on or off from within the MText editor? At present, I type the text and then set the background mask from within the properties box.

Yes; the "down arrow" at right side of mtext menubar has options that include masking.

Or, highlight the text, right click the highlighted text and pick "Background Mask".  Better yet, us the following macro:
