48V POE using 24VDC battery bank
48V POE using 24VDC battery bank
(OP)
I have an off-grid home and office. I am installing a motorola canopy (24vdc non-standard POE) on a 120' tower.
The tower is 1200 feet from the power source. I am using an ethernet extender to boost the signal between the house and tower.
To decrease electrical consumption I want to connect as many of the dc equipment directly to our battery bank as possible, including the POE. I've been told to simply attach the 48VDC to the POE pairs (which would then be split to 24VDC at the tower end).
In my research I found this, a 24vdc input/48vdc output POE injector: ht tp://www.s ixnet.com/ product/in dustrial-p ower-over- ethernet-p oe-injecto rs-136.cfm
Any thoughts? I would like to be well armed with some knowledge before I try to fire up the canopy using our new system.

Break out your wallet.
Probably my biggest concern with outdoor POE would be lightning. Hope you've considered that.

we have the tower grounded really well, including the guys. plus we're installing lightening protection along the lines and in between the house and tower so any ground charges should be caught.
i found another 24vdc to 48vdc poe injector from these guys:

the fellow said others had used it for this purpose, so i'm crossing the fingers here. it seems others have done POE by hooking up to the batteries but i'm concerned about voltage spikes during charging, so i'm going to use one of these regulators.
