problems determining a press capacity

problems determining a press capacity

(OP)
I´ve got thru many headaches thinking how determine the capacity of a Clearing straight side press (estimated 400 Ton), no serial number or model availiable.

Does anyone know about any non destructive device or procedure to determine the actual capacity for this press?

thanks in advance.

Dear Mimaquinaria;

If this press has a large flywheel, you may be able to estimate the press capacity by carefully measuring the cross sectional area of the flywheel and calculating the energy it can produce using formulas from the flywheel section of the Machinerys Handbook. (My copy is 21st Edition, Page 333). This would still only result in a rough estimate. You could confirm the capacity by comparing the size of your flywheel with the sizes of flywheels on brand new 400 ton presses.

Hope this helps

thank you very much Adrian, I think it will work out, I´ve just got the handbook and let´s start studying.

thanks.

RE: problems determining a press capacity

you've got to be very careful when calculating the amount of "extractable" energy from the flywheel and calculating the strength of the crank.  If you've ever seen a punchpress come un-glued, the very notion of it would send chills up your spine.  You should contact the factory with as much info as possible, the crank and ram journal sizes etc, and they will tell you what model it is.  You're playing with dynamite trying to do it any other way.
