Internal Walls

Internal Walls

I am currently working on a building with some interior masonry walls.  These walls are non load bearing (vertical or lateral).  Are there any requirements in IBC 2006 or ASCE 7-05 for applying an "internal pressure" to the walls?

RE: Internal Walls

IBC 5 PSF

That seems to ring a bell... but where is it in IBC 2006?

RE: Internal Walls

1607.13 Interior walls and partitions.

RE: Internal Walls

The 5 psf may be less than the lateral required for seismic depending on the wall weight and your location.  So, don't forget that aspect too.

I am aware of the seismic in ASCE 7-05 section 13.3.

Thanks for the help.

RE: Internal Walls

I wouldn't design for less than 10psf.  Though IBC 2006 says 5psf the old Standard Building Code was 10psf.  Seismic usually controls in my area (>10psf) and I bet seismic would always be greater than 5psf in the u.s.
