Offsetting all surfaces to represent paint

Offsetting all surfaces to represent paint

Offsetting all surfaces to represent paint

(OP)
I have a model of a door. I would like to offset all surfaces by 0.5mm to represent painting the door, this would create a new solid model which I could put into an assembly and then I could define components from the painted door.

How would I do this? Is it a good idea?

Thanks in advance, Chris.

RE: Offsetting all surfaces to represent paint

If it works for you and your company ... it's a good idea.

One method could be to create a zero-offset surface from the faces to be painted, and then thicken that surface to represent the paint. Make sure the Merge option is not selected.

RE: Offsetting all surfaces to represent paint

I like CBLs suggestion.
A few years ago I sent a suggestion to SW to add a feature to add paint or any other type of material to a surface. It would help with tolerances and FEA, for example.

Copy the body of the item to be painted.  Use "Delete Face" to delete a single face from the copied body without patching.  You will then have a near-complete surface body for offsetting.

What to do about the missing face?  Copy it (zero offset) before deleting, then knit the offset to the original surface body.

Excellent tip, Tick.
