Wall thickness of casting

Wall thickness of casting

Wall thickness of casting

(OP)
Hello one and all.

What is the best method to find the minimum wall thickness of a complex model of a casting for example? Is there something in the analysis menu?

Many thanks in advance.

Best regards

Life shouldn't be measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the number of times when it's taken away...

RE: Wall thickness of casting

There is 'Molded part validation' in the analysis menu. It will give you a part colored based on wall thickness. I've only used it a few times, so I'm not familiar with all the options (it may or may not report a minimum thickness). Also, I'm not sure what license is necessary to run the tool.

I thought as much Cowski, but we don't seem to have the license.

From the pull downs, Analysis, Deviation, Checking... you can check for min or max distance between curves, faces, edges and mixes.  Wireframe your screen when you run it, and you'll notice an asterisk (*) at the min/max locations.  Between 2 surfaces, the u/v grid will highlight, but if can notice on the screen, all values within tolerance are + signs and out of tolerance values are * signs.  Manually intensive, but useful nonetheless.  Hope this helps...

CAD should pay for itself, shouldn't it?

Thanks SS we have had a look at that, but there are just too many surfaces to even attempt. was hoping that selection intent would allow us to pick to groups of tangent faces and do it that way, alas it is not to be.

RE: Wall thickness of casting

Simon,

Try extracting two regions and using them for a clearance check to one another using Analysis>Assembly Clearance. Not perfect or perhaps horribly convenient, but it may get you by. BTW I actually have the Molded Part Validation License and it is very useful for that kind of thing.
