ASME Section VIII Div 1 Edition differences

ASME Section VIII Div 1 Edition differences

I am working on a repair for a Sec. VIII Div 1 vessel and the client wants to go back to the original code.  The vessel was stamped in 1981.  I have been using COMPRESS to do our vessel design, but it only goes back to the 1995 edition of the code.  Are there any major differences between this code and the 1980 edition.  Thanks for any help.

ALLOWABLE STRESSES AND HYDRO PRESSURE FOR A COUPLE

Okay, next question, Where is the best place to aquire an old copy of the code or at least the allowable stresses?

I believe vesselfab read your post too quickly. I'm pretty sure he knows better!

Using the 1995 edition is reasonable for a 1981 vessel - the allowable tensile stress and hydrotest requirements did not change until 1998. It would help if you were to let us know what material and what temperature - you may have some esoteric material which did change allowable stresses.

I would remind your client that the words "original code of construction" as used by NBIC refer to Section VIII Div. 1, not the edition/addenda. Thus, you are free to use a more modern version of the code such as the 1995 ed. Since you are working on a repair, the allowable stress changes shouldn't impact your work (if you were using new allowable stresses, that would be an alteration).

Whoops. Make that "...did not change until 1999." That's 1998 Edition with 1999 Addenda.

Thanks jte,  This vessel is only 650 deg F and the material is SA516-70.  The allowable stresses are not changing.

Thanks jte

only missed it by one book!!
