8" CMU - Simple Question
8" CMU - Simple Question
(OP)
Here's the problem - 8" CMU wall, unreinforced, lateral wind force on wall is 29.4 psf, vertical axial compressive force on wall is 460 lbs/linear ft live, 345 lbs/linear ft dead. Wall has no grouted cores and has full mortar bedding.
For some reason I'm doubting myself. I say this will not come close to calculating as the tensile stress in the wall due to lateral wind far exceeds the ACI 530 allowable of 25psi.
Do you agree?

1. h/t is very high.
2. It is doubtful your wall has full mortar bedding anywhere in the wall unless the bedding course or if you are in some strange place.
Where are you located and what is the applicable building code since ACI 530 has no legal standing unless is it adopted by a legal authority, referenced by a code authority or if you want to sign off on it and accept the liability.
In some cases, depending on the configuration and intersecting walls, even the "lowly" empirical design section of ACI 530 could show that this could possibly be in compliance.
If you are bound and determined to do a full engineered analysis, do you have any idea of what the real f'm (not assumed) of the existing walls is since this can be critical in some of the analysis methods.
Grouting without rebar is usually not that beneficial, but there are studies that show some very great gains.
Is there a link to your previous posts that may provide additional information?
