A year or so ago Hudson and I were looking at how to model tyres (tractor at the time). Any how I've had a bash a creating a parametric car tyre (roughly) and though you might like to have a mess around with it.

Any how notice that as you increase the tyre in size, once you get past 500mm dia the width of the tyre changes automatically as does the number of grooves, there is also a subtle change in the length of the grooves (look in the sketch named water tread).

If you have any ideas how it can be improved, then please let me know as I always want to learn.

Have fun thumbsup

By the way, if you are not familiar with expressions you need to click Tools > Expressions and edit the one that is called tyre_dia

Yes, but is it an asymmetrical tread pattern winky smile

John

Now if by asymmetric you are refering to the of tread being staggered, then this was intentional smile However, if you've spotted somewhere where I have dropped a clod and the tread shape is actually different, then please could you tell me where I've gone wrong.

Simon,

Very like the wheel image that I have on my website. The tyre is done with pattern face for the most part. Sorry but I'm not likely to be sharing that one here unfortunately.

Yes I tried pattern face, as that is what used when I modelled the tractor tyre, however I couldn't get it to work with the car tyre sad It worked out OK though in the end, just had to use an alternate approach. smile

RE: Something to play with at dinner time.

By asymmetrical I was referring to the fact that on real tires the individual sections of the tread (grooves) are different sizes (widths and lengths) from one set of tread features to the next as you move around the tire so as to avoid any chance of high-speed vibration as the tire rotates.  These different non-repeating patterns are designed to be as random as possible so as to avoid any harmonic situations throughout the full range of expected rotational speeds in which the tire will be used.
