Can a 70/30 CuNi filler rod (GTAW) be use to weld a 90/10 CuNi pipe/tube? Some people say it can, but I want a more trusted opinion. If it can, what are the ideal parameters e.g. voltage, amps, wire size etc.

Cheers....

Copper Development Association, Publication 139

Quote:

Consumables of 70-30 copper-nickel should be used to weld both alloys......The 70-30 consumables offer superior deposition characteristics and the corrosion resistance of the weld metal is at least comparable to both alloys

How much can you trust something you read on a free Internet forum?

This isn't meant to diss Steve's excellent response or any other that people, especially the frequent contributors supply. IMO, Eng-Tips does an amazing job of providing accurate responses to all sorts of questions.

However, you really don't know how good an answer you're getting.

Now Steve gave you a hint as to where to find the answer.  Since his quote only says "both alloys," you might want to confirm that your 90/10 alloy is one of those.

In fact, I'd recommend a visit to the Copper Development Association website (www.copper.org) and take a look at all their publications.  I especially like their prices.

BTW, Steve, thanks for the response.  Star for you.

RE: 70/10 CuNi tig rod

You could also read AWS/ASME A/SFA 5.7, A7.5. which also states that class ERCuNi (70% Cu - 30% Ni) is used to weld the copper-nickel alloys' 90/10, 80/20 and 70/30.

Also AWS Handbooks.

There is no shortage of info.

Hi VPL,

You're asking how much trust? I'd say not that much! Only to those who give references like you, Steve and Stanweld. I may just be starting but I know a few things, I do some research and it's more of just a confirmation that result of my research will be parallel to answers people give here.
I thank everybody here for their contribution, whether informative or not.

Cheers..
