RE: diffference between ASTMA435 and ASTM A578

Just to start you off in your standards selection review exercise: A435 is for steel plate and A578 is for alloy clad steel plate.

RE: diffference between ASTMA435 and ASTM A578

A578 is not only applicable to alloy clad plate but can also be applied to "normal" plate.  A578 has 3 different acceptance levels (A, B, C).  The allowable size of discontinuities  for Level A is comparable to the acceptance level of A435.  Level B is slighly more severe, Level C is much more severe.
ASME VIII Division 2 edition 2007 par. 3.3.3 requires ASTM A578 Level B for plate thicknesses >= 50mm.
