Pack & Go from PDM Works

Pack & Go from PDM Works

(OP)
How can I pack & go a assly & its parts directly from vault. I dont want to open it into SWx. I dont want to checkit out into my working directory either.

Is this possible?

RE: Pack & Go from PDM Works

For Workgroup PDM? No, not possible. For Enterprise PDM? Not sure, haven't used it.

RE: Pack & Go from PDM Works

Chris,

if no changes are made there is no reason to check back in after the pack and go.

RE: Pack & Go from PDM Works

Joe is right. Just release ownership after you check it out and delete the fiels from your working directory after you Pack and Go the files.

RE: Pack & Go from PDM Works

For that matter, don't even take ownership.  Simply get the files from the vault, do what you need to do, and delete.

RE: Pack & Go from PDM Works

I agree.
I'm used to check in. I check them back as same rev with the 'delete local files' checked. Saves me time looking for the files in explorer.

RE: Pack & Go from PDM Works

I dont think there is a way to pack & go directly from the PDM works.

The reason is that you cannot copy the files & change the links at same time in PDM whereas you can chage the links between existing files by renaming them.

I would do the following if you case

Check out the files without opening them in a different location to your normal working folder. Then if you do not want any interference between existing files, open another SolidWorks window & do Pack & Go.

Hope this helps

Cheers

RE: Pack & Go from PDM Works

You should be able to access the files directly from windows explorer because the Revision Levels are set as Folders in PDM Works when saved into the PDM directory and can Try the Right Click Explorer SolidWorks > Pack & Go give it a try by brwsing the PDMWorks vault in Windows explorer if possible.

Michael,

How can I access the PDMwork group  folder from the Microsoft Windows Explorer ?

RE: Pack & Go from PDM Works

Scott,

The encryption method in Workgroup is a joke. If you can understand the file structure so you know where exactly you are in the tree and know exactly what the file name is supposed to be you can defeat it simple by renaming hte file and correcting the extension. Not actively worth the effort, but possible. And accessing the files from Explorer requires access to the install directory of the vault on it's server. If you're set up half way intelligently the standard user won't have access to those directories through Windows Explorer.

As for checking in at the same revision, I wouldn't recommend that either. It's possible that you could change something in the model without realizing it and would then check in that change. While this would probably fall into the "yeah it changed but it didn't affect anything" category 9 times out of 10, you can bet that 10th time it'll cost you a decent chunk of change in messed up production.

I have looked in the PDMWorks, there is no option to Pack & Go. I generally use pack and go to send files to some one. If it wasnt a assly, but it is just a part, I observed that we can drag & drop the file from the SW Explorer into the email. It actually in back ground, throws a copy into the Sw working directory.

RE: Pack & Go from PDM Works

It would be worth while if you can post, what you want to achieve with doing what you want to do.

that way we can think out of the Box & suggest something..........if the Box is not too big:)

Sure Gurjjeet, Makes sense. Here is a situation.

We maintain the files on the PDMWorks uptodate every end of the day. I would like to give my manager a chance to send files to vendors for quotes. He neither use SW. I would like to show him a way to open up PDMworks, select the required sub assly and pack & go from there. I don't want him to unknowingly checkout files or take ownership.

Hoped there was a way.

RE: Pack & Go from PDM Works

BluTurtle,

I believe you could prevent your manager from checking out files / taking ownership with proper project permissions.  I don't see any way that he will be able to do the pack and go operation without getting the files out of the vault.

RE: Pack & Go from PDM Works

There is a vault admin setting, "Keep extra copy of latest files".  When this is selected the server software maintains a latest directory off of the directory where the vault files are stored.  You might be able to share that directory and have the person pack & go from there.

Eric, Thats a nice piece of information. Thanks. I will search for this on the help.

RE: Pack & Go from PDM Works

If all you are worried about is him accidentally changing something then all you have to do is alter his permissions so the files are read only, then it really doesn't matter if he checks documents out, he won't be able to change them anywhere but his local drive.

RE: Pack & Go from PDM Works

I agree with previous post change the read/write settings for your manager so that he only has read only access to the data. Also it might be a good idea to train him on the use of edrawings. Another option if you have the api version of PDMworks is have you manager access the vault with the web portal and view the drawings with edrawings. Web portal access is always read only (last time I checked)and you can give unlimited users access. If you are concerned about sending vendors the source file you may want use a PDF converter we use Bluebeam but there are others out there that do the job well.

Hope this helps,

sam

Access from the web browser is a great idea. I dont know if I have the API version of the PDMworks. How can I check it? Is it a different addin?

RE: Pack & Go from PDM Works

Sam,

It sounds like they are sending 3-D data to their vendors for quote, or 2-D's with the associated 3-D part. At this point the web client isn't very helpful because he'll still need to open the part to PnG it, but he'll just be using a clunkier interface to do it. No better way to turn your boss off to an idea than making it difficult to use.
