Historical shape - "BG" series

Historical shape - "BG" series

Historical shape - "BG" series

Is anyone familiar with the "BG" designation for steel shapes? I have a building constructed cca 1930 that is using this shape, 24" BG 148 in particular. I have not found such a shape in the AISC Historical Shapes Database v13.1.

Thanks!

I have not come across the "BG" designation before, but believe that I have found your beam. Go to my website and download "AISC Iron & Steel Beams, 1873 to 1952" from this page:
http://www.slideruleera.net/contributions.html
Page 48 shows only one 24" beam @ 148 lb/ft, G24a, from Bethlehem catalogs S27 & S30.
Download the S27 Bethlehem catalog (I have it listed as 1928 version) from this page:
http://www.slideruleera.net/miscellaneous.html
Page 71 calls G24a a "Girder Beam".
The Engineer who prepared your plans probably wanted to make it clear that the 148 lb/ft beam was manufactured by Bethlehem (the letter "B" was the common designation at that time for Bethlehem). I have seen the manufacturer's abbreviation used along with the beam designation, similar to "BG" that you have.

SlideRuleEra,

I must say, if you were in my office, I'd buy you lunch! Excellent reply, much better what AISC had told me (zip).

I like your collection of engineering references, definitelly bookmarked the site. Thanks again.
