Optical Ground Cable for OHTL - testing
Optical Ground Cable for OHTL - testing
(OP)
Hi, please could anybody here clarify me the differences between the stress-strain test and the tensile test for the OPGW?
I have the IEC 60794-1-2, IEEE 1138 an also EN 50182 but I'm lost. These mechanical and optical tests seems to be mixed up to me.
Also I would like to ask on testing the fittings for the OPGW...
As far as I know there are some rules in CIGRE publications...but are there some other?
(type and routine test)
Thank you!

RE: Optical Ground Cable for OHTL - testing
Stress-strain
A sample of OPGW or ADSS not less than 10 m in length, complete with the proposed termination fittings shall
be subject to a stress-strain test. The test shall be undertaken in accordance with Annex B of IEC 61089 and the
measuring techniques in accordance with Method 501B of BS EN 187000 or IEC 60794-1-2-E1.
Acceptance criteria: There shall be no visual change to the OPGW strands after the test. The fibre strain
must be l ess 0.05 % at 85 % of the rated tensile strength of the OPGW or ADSS.
Tensile performance
The test shall be undertaken in accordance with the load conditions spe cified in Annex B of IEC 61089 and the
measuring techniques for fibre attenuation changes in accordance wi th Method 501A of BS EN 187000 or
IEC 60794- 1-2-E1.
Acceptance criteria: There shall be no permanent change in the optical attenuation at the specified
wavelength(s) after test, while the change in optical attenuation during the test shall be
less than 0.05 dB p er test fibre per km from zero load to 85 % of the rated tensile
strength.
There is also a UK industry spec for testing of OPGW and OPPC fittings, but as far as I'm aware its still in draft.
