Can anhydrous ammonia (vapor or liquid)cause erosion or corrosion for piping elbow and tee made of carbon steel or low alloy steel in refrigeration system?

RE: Can anhydrous ammonia cause erosion for piping?

sounds like contamination in the system.

RE: Can anhydrous ammonia cause erosion for piping?

it can cause erosion if the fluid velocity is high, you should look at API 14E and use the formula to calculate the max velocity to avoid erosion..

RE: Can anhydrous ammonia cause erosion for piping?

In high velocity flow pattern (<erosion velocity), the anhydrous ammonia may not have a specific synergetic effect to accelerate the corrosion while amine or ammonium bisulfide has an accelerative effect of corrosion.

The most critical issue will be Stress Corrosion Cracking, not a severe metal loss if the design is under the general erosion velocity limitation.
