Occupancy Classification Question

Occupancy Classification Question

Occupancy Classification Question

(OP)
Working on a project that packages seed and/or grains into cartons for shipment. Storage of cartons takes place in a separate building. So basically, all this building does is house the packaging of the seeds and/or grains. Ordinary Hazard Group II an appropriate classification?

RE: Occupancy Classification Question

Is seed dust an issue?  How is this handled?  The dust is likely combustible and explosive in a dust cloud.

OH2 may not be appropriate.

RE: Occupancy Classification Question

(OP)
There is a fair amount of dust on everything you touch. Product is handled in various shoots to fill bags and cartons.

RE: Occupancy Classification Question

Questions:

1) Height of storage?
2) Ceiling slope?
3) Is the building heated?
4) Has the dust been evaluated and measured to determine its combustibility?
5) Are they going to fix item 4?

RE: Occupancy Classification Question

OK do you think you have this condtion??

5.4.1* Extra Hazard (Group 1). Extra hazard (Group 1) occupancies shall be defined as occupancies or portions of other occupancies where the quantity and combustibility of contents are very high and dust, lint, or other materials are present, introducing the probability of rapidly developing fires with high rates of heat release but with little or no combustible or flammable liquids.

If they have uncontrolled dust, the sprinklers maybe the least of their problems. Sounds like they need a dust expert to help them. When u give them the quote for EX 1 vs Ord 2 they will get the idea they may want to get more help and control the hazard.
