Solid shell elements

Solid shell elements

Solid shell elements

(OP)
Hi,

As I understand it, a quadratic element can resolve a linear field within its boundaries, whereas a linear element only can deliver constant stress.

The solid shell element SOLSH190 is an eight-node hexahedral, -and is a linear element type, right???  And should therefore deliver only constant stress within its boundaries.  But, the results I get clearly shows varying stress through the individual elements.  This is contradicting information, which probably means that I'm missing some essential facts.

I would really appreciate it if someone could straighten things out for me.  For instance, does SOLSH190 act like a quadratic element?  Or, can linear elements deliver varying stress?

Let me know if I need to clarify this request for help.

RE: Solid shell elements

After some contemplation..  When textbooks talk about linear, quadratic or higher order element definitions, they implicitly refer to the strain sampling along the element's edges, -as opposed to on their surfaces or in their volumes.  This conclusion explains a lot.

Please let me know if I'm still missing something.
