LHC sets energy record

LHC sets energy record

LHC sets energy record

(OP)

Quote:

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment on the French-Swiss border has set a new world record for energy.

The LHC pushed the energy of its particle beams beyond one trillion electron volts, making it the world's highest energy particle accelerator.

The previous record was held by the Tevatron particle accelerator in Chicago.

Officials say it is another milestone in the LHC's drive towards its main scientific tests set for 2010.

Kudos to those involved. Must have been a nerve wracking moment.

RE: LHC sets energy record

What's even crazier is it should operate normally at 7 trillion electron volts. 1 trillion is just childs play....

RE: LHC sets energy record

The LHC is the most expensive and most useless device ever built, just serving the ego of a few.

RE: LHC sets energy record

wolf,
I don't agree with your assertion. Obviously it's a very costly project, but to dismiss it as useless is a bit extreme. We have no way to know what may be revealed by the device, but hopefully it will help continue to advance our understanding of theoretical physics for several decades to come. If you want to argue that fundamental research in such matters is useless, then so be it, but I think it's a human imperative to understand our universe as best we can.

An interesting exercise would be to calculate the efficiency of the device. (total energy imparted to all particles accelerated) / (total energy consumed). The number would probably have a lot zeros after the decimal point.

I guess this thing is not a green machine.
