Weld Beads? SW2010?

Weld Beads? SW2010?

Weld Beads? SW2010?

(OP)
I have SW 2010 on order...but I have a concern....

Does SW 2010 still have the functionality from back in SW2003-2005 days where you had to model weldments as assemblies, and there was a tool (albeit clunky) for creating weld beads that spanned real weld geometry as used in engineered pipe and vessel fabrication (grooves and weld roots/gaps)?

Back then, you had to do it as an assembly.  It would be ideal if you could now do it as a multibody part (avoiding the extra step of positioning the parts in assembly absolutely perfectly), but still have that weld bead tool.  I actually had a good handle on it...and could make it work.  They key was knowing where to add split lines.  All I see now is the 'weld fillet tool'...which is a tool for toy welding of frames, etc.

Can Solid Works handle REAL WELDING yet?  I have the feeling it can not...I and I will have to develop tools for modelling this the hard way...

The reason I really want to model the welds, is that it will be a great costing tool.  Just calc the volume of weld material, look at the different paths (ie setups) and you can accurately cost fab time.

I read every post there, before posting here. Nothing there was even close to answering my question.  Every welding question there is about non pressure containing structural welds. From the Solidworks help link posted there, it looks like the weld bead tool now only does fillets.  There were many more posts here that were much closer to the subject matter I was looking for...so that is why I posted here.

RE: Weld Beads? SW2010?

Slagathor,

Glad you did some research over on the SW forum.  Since I did not see your question over there (I read all the posts there also) I assumed you had not been reading that forum.  You can get an account and post your questions on the SolidWorks forum also..... smile

I am sure some of the folks here will answer soon.

I would also get with your reseller and have them demo the weldment capabilities.  They should be able to answer your questions on the weld bead work flow.

Cheers,

Slagathor,
SolidWorks is asking for people to provide input about the weld feature for future releases. You will need to fill out a NDA to participate.

As I suspected, a lot of the functionality of the old weld bead tool is gone.  I guess it was too buggy...so they just decided to pull the functionality out.  If I want to create a costing model that relies on multibody parts and volume of weld material, I will have to come up with some macros to model the welds automatically...  I am sure it can be done...its only work.

RE: Weld Beads? SW2010?

We create a welded configuration of parts by adding a feature that looks like the weld bead to show weld beads in assemblies. If I'm doing FEA, I model the assembly as a part creating all the weld beads and in some cases adding air gaps between features to speed up meshing and still having a fairly accurate model of the finished item.

You are correct this does add time to the job.
