Maximum Velocity in Rubber Lined Pipes

Maximum Velocity in Rubber Lined Pipes

Hello there,

What are the basic guideline velocities for rubber lined pipes?

We have an application where we are pumping water through rubber lined pipes, what are acceptable velocities?

Laurence Sachs

RE: Maximum Velocity in Rubber Lined Pipes

Normally rubber lining is used because there is an abrasive material in the fluid.  That may affect the maximum velocity you'd want to have.  Are you pumping such a mixture?  Or, what is the reason for the rubber lining?

Thank you for your reply,

I am speaking from the pump suppliers point of view, our customer has requested rubber lined piping, I unfortunately do not know why they have decided to do this. They are pumping clean water???

We have just had a discrepancy of our 'acceptable' pipe velocities through the pipes. I am refurring to the piping within the pump where we have had anything up to 4.6m/s before.

It is piping of between 500 and 700mm in Diameter.

Clean water???  OK, I'd say that would only be limited by the usual minimum for sweeping occasional sediments of 1 m/s, 3 m/s for minimizing pressure loss to 5 m/s to avoid water hammer, not to say hammer isn't possible at lesser velocities.
