Max Starting Load For DG Generator

Max Starting Load For DG Generator

Max Starting Load For DG Generator

(OP)
I have a DG set datasheet that specifies the maximum starting kVA which are as follows:

Max %VD         P.F.                 Load
15%             10%                  10.2MVA
15%             40%                  10.9MVA
15%             80%                  15.0MVA

Is this applicable if the generator is pre-loaded and I started a motor?

SkVA = Running kVA + Motor Starting kVA (largest motor)

RE: Max Starting Load For DG Generator

Pre load can make a difference if it is significant, ie 600 hp motor on line and starting another one.  If the pre load is just site load, lights, small exhaust fans, etc of a few 10's of kW it generally won't make much difference.

I would go back to the mfg. and ask.  Most have free sizing software that will allow you to check it out by looking at different scenarios of starting with and without pre load.

Does the 15% Voltage Drop relates to 0.85 P.U. dip at the generator terminals?
