Local area pagers

Local area pagers

Local area pagers

(OP)
Has anybody implemented or has references about a system for paging maintenance personnel within a plant?  We want to implement one where our mechanics or electricians can carry a pager at all times and our alarm system automatically pages them when their intervention is required.  Any ideas?  Preferrably not using a commercial cell-phone network.

RE: Local area pagers

A long long time ago, the Radio Shack chain in North America used to sell a pager system of the sort you described. Came with a base unit and two or three receivers. Probably worked on 27 MHz band.

These days the closest equivalent would be those FRS walkie talkies. They're UHF. They tend to have a Call button for paging. If you insist on individual addressing then you could make use of the channels and codes. But having everyone on one channel might be better.

RE: Local area pagers

Sorry - missed the automatic part.

That's a relatively simple interfacing issue if the system provides a dry contact output.

You can also purchase alarm system dialers. They deliver a message by telephone when triggered.

RE: Local area pagers

If you are concerned about a commercial pager not working (not getting signal) inside the plant ask the dealer about the pagers doctors use.  I'm not sure what the differences are but I know there are differences.  Presumably in either signal intensity and/or freq.  These pagers work well in areas that otherwise do not get signal.

Try this - we use them to provide telephone contact and in addittion the system relays all alarms out to the pager so that we can see instantly what alarm has been recieved by the building management system (trend) A good way of keeping ontop of all that is going on within the building.
