engineering change control

(OP)
Not solely related to SW but I figured a good place to start, I'm trying to get my head around change control and the process behind it, my company is moving from a  R&D to a manufacturing phase and we are looking into the use of an ERP system, presently most of the BOM managing and purchasing for builds it done though engineering but as we move forward our manufacturing guy has to take owner ship of the resources, we are using an engineering change system to keep track of things but looking forward I would like to see how it's down in the 'real world' for instance I can't see me revising the whole BOM if one item gets updated.
Please any useful links of advise would be great!

RE: engineering change control

That's a tall order.

I've seen products go from R&D to Production via a Document Control department.  DC ensures all relative information is properly documented and controlled.  A Planning department gets BOM information from DC and issues travelers for Production.

ERP systems are great for Production, but usually Engineering uses some for of PLM system.  If you are lucky your PLM and ERP systems speak the same language to prevent duplication of work/information, thereby reducing the chance for errors.

RE: engineering change control

You'll need to expand your vulcabulary first in matters of company processes.  For example, MBOM and EBOM.  Different BOM views are required for different functions.  Manufactoring BOM {MBOM} is how the product is built.  Engerinering BOM{EBOM} is for product definition.

Also, you'll want to look into PDMs, PLMs, and ERPs or MRPs.

I highly recommend getting one or more consults.
