Oily waste water filters.

Oily waste water filters.

Not sure I am in the correct forum. We are an offshore vessel trying to clean our Oily bilge waste water.
We are using a Hamworthy OWS HS 5 (Oily water Separator) and it does separate the oil from the water, but since there is no fine filter in this unit (like the old units) therefore, although once passed thru the separator there is no more oil in the water, the water is not clean enough to pass the 15 ppm sensor, due to rust or carbon particles.
My question is what type of filter (brand and model) can you recommend? The flow is aprox 83 lit/min.

RE: Oily waste water filters.

You need a find a local source for a polypropylene Wound Depth Cartridge filter system. Not sure where you are located but you can find cartridge filters by a number of vendors. Here is an example of one name brand.

Why not try wastewater treatment chemicals? Like flocculants and coagulants such as fumaric acid, polyaspartic acid etc. We are a global supplier for wastewater treatment and wastewater treatment chemicals. You can find details here: http://www.leadbondchem.com.

I see your point in using Flocculants but we suck from the bottom of the tanks to get "clean" water. But if we use this chemicals we will get oil on the top and the sludge at the bottom, so where should we then suck the water from to forward it into our OWS Oily water Separator? Dont want to pump that sludge into it.

I'm sure you have a good answer to that.

RE: Oily waste water filters.

The most important is to know the properties of your water, for example, OIW ppm, oil properties, solid ppm, solid components and your OIW emulsion satability etc. Only with those information, we can find the good answer to treat your water. The water flow is small, from what you are saying, it seems your water is not difficult to treat. There are tons of techologies and equipment available in the market.  Are you sure you do not have oil after the separator? are you sure there are rust and carbon particles in the water? solid is easy to separate from water.
