Spill protection by ACI 318 or 350?

Spill protection by ACI 318 or 350?

Spill protection by ACI 318 or 350?

(OP)
We do a number of tank foundations with various types of containment and spill protection. Containment being defined as something holding a liquid. Spill protection meaning walls and base slab used to direct a liquid to a containment area.

We are having a difference of opinion in our office as to whether spill protection needs to be designed by ACI 350 or OK to be designed by ACI 318. What is your opinion?

RE: Spill protection by ACI 318 or 350?

Here's how I read it:

If the element is containing the liquid, ACI350.  IF it is a foundation for a tank, ACI318.

The provisions of ACI350 are there to prevent leakage through the concrete, and this is not a concern for the foundation.

RE: Spill protection by ACI 318 or 350?

I think ACI 350 is more appropriate for water/waste water related works. It was based on ACI 318 (strength concerns) with environmental emphases.

The difference is containment could hold a liquid for a  period of time until it gets pumped out. Spill protection may only hold it until it flows into the containment area.

If the liquid leaks out of the spill protection, it could cause an environmental problem (depending upon what the liquid is) that needs remediation. The containment and spill protection is one system so I would think that all should be designed by ACI 350.

Incidentally, ACI 350 was re-named from Sanitary to Environmental.

You are right. I think ACI 350 is more stringent on the tightness/control measures.

RE: Spill protection by ACI 318 or 350?

Hi

I have similar project where I have contaiment structure  for a tank, that will have to hold liquid in case of spilling the only diffecence is Im using masonry blocks. Can I apply methods from ACI 350 just use valuse for masonry?

RE: Spill protection by ACI 318 or 350?

bmagdalena:

ACI is for reinforced constructures, not masonry.
