Best software/file type to use to make a dumb solid to scale

Best software/file type to use to make a dumb solid to scale

(OP)
SWX 2009

My customer sent me an assembly of a pump that has many pieces that are not mated.  The assembly is drawn 25.4 times too big so I need to scale it down.  I saved it as a part file and inside this new part file is a bunch of solids and surfaces.  I tried to use the scale command and it will only allow me to select three of the surfaces to scale so I need to find another option.  There was another thread on here talking about saving the assembly out in another format to then bring it in again as a dumb solid.

So I want to know what is the best file type to save the original assembly out as (iges, parasolid etc.) so that I can bring it back into SWX and get a single part with a single dumb solid within it.  Do I have to bring it into another software before bringing back to SWX?  I have Pro-E and MDT available.
Thanks

RE: Best software/file type to use to make a dumb solid to scale

What format did the customer send you?

Obviously 25.4 is just a metric/imperial mismatch. Can the customer resend the file(s) in the correct units? Can you adjust the import options?

The file was just sent as a Solidworks assembly, I cannot tell what the original software was.  My customer got it from his customer so unfortunately by the time I would be able to get a new one, the job would already be late.

Yeah, I saw that in another thread and typically I might be able to use it, but not in this case.  The ass'y is totally not mated and there are a ton of parts.  So even if I used a sldprt of my assembly as a template to re-assemble everything, it would take forever.

Save the assembly as a part.
Open the part and add a scale feature.

Imported assemblies (dumb) will always come without any mates and we you scale it you may lose your locations as well.

The one thing you would want is the original file (That you said you can't get) because when importing a file in (varying on the type) you can adjust the units upon import.

Sounds to me like they imported the dumb assembly under the wrong units and that is why its 25.4 off.

What file type are you able to adjust the units on when you import?  If I can find that out, I can export it out into another software then export it out of the new software as that particular file type.

RE: Best software/file type to use to make a dumb solid to scale

Can you export your assembly to IGES or STEP again with the wrong units to bring it back?

I will try IGESing it out and bringing it into Pro-e then bringing it back into SWX.  We'll see what happens.

The STEP file worked.  I made sure I checked the option 'Document Template Spedified Unit'

Thanks for the help.
