Left and Right Main Assemblies

Left and Right Main Assemblies

Left and Right Main Assemblies

(OP)
I am in machine design (out of hte VAR scene now) and we have to have a Right and Left hand main assembly\sub-assemblies and even though some part files are not mirrored while many are, we place all the files of the one side into a new folder. There is not a good solution to this yet. SW has found a great way to mirror a sub-assembly\parts within the assembly, but have yet to find a good solution for us in the way we have to have our designs designed. Its a constant battle and when working with the example of automobile lights we have to have 2 separate assemblies. They also get new part numbers. Configurations have been tried here and ended up making matters worse.

Solidworks needs to find a much easier way of making RH to LH assemblies. Presently we pack and go out the side fiinsh first (usually RH), and the files that need to be mirrored we break the relationship from the old file when we mirror it and then we replace the component in the assembly. Some times it works some times it doesn't. When it doesn't we are left redoing everything we just did in the other assembly and makes for twice as long work to be performed.

If anyone has a better solution or suggestions I am all ears!!

RE: Left and Right Main Assemblies

The SW 2010 demonstrates better LH/RH parts & sub-assly management. I beleive, its one of their highlighted enhancements.

RE: Left and Right Main Assemblies

True. When I attended the 2010 rollout, LH/RH assemblies was a highlight.
2009 and older is a PITA for mirror assy's.

Yes that is true when you have a RH and LH within the same assembly... we don't need that. We have 2 completely separate assemblies one RH and the other LH... SW 2010 does not account for that.

RE: Left and Right Main Assemblies

Scott,

In SW2010, have you tried creating a temporary assy consisting of only the sub-assy you want to mirror? The mirrored assy can then be created (some mates will probably need fixing), and the temp assy deleted, or just not saved on closing.

I will try this out at home in 2010 (only 2009 here). However I did try this in SW2010 this past weekend and was unable to find a valid solution for what we do here.

Did know if anyone here has ran into this same problem. I know I am not working for the only company that needs a RH and LH assembly without being in the same assembly.

RE: Left and Right Main Assemblies

I have a composite bonding fixture where both sides are used with identical parts, but mirrored.
The models were started in v2008, now v2009.
It has been easier for me to make configurations with the corresponding orientations as if they were mirrored.
When I upgrade to v2010, I plan on using the new mirror functionality.

Attached is an example image of what we deal with in SW. This is what we deal with regularly.

Not all parts will be mirrored, but those that are and those that are not may have to change so I need to have the ability to make changes as well as maintain Hole wizard data.

Looks like a lot of fun nonetheless.
