PD Measurement of Switchgear

PD Measurement of Switchgear

(OP)
Hi Everyone.
Is it advisable to use a portable PD measurement system that can analyse PD in live conditions on 13.8kV Switchgear which is hardly 3 years into service. The Switchgear is installed in an airconditioned room.OR is it advisable to install a viewing window on busbar, cable and breaker compartment for periodic thermal imaging.
thanks in advance for your valuable feedback.

RE: PD Measurement of Switchgear

The two technologies are for detecting different problems.

PD will detect insulation problems and usually give enough warning for preventative measures to be taken before a failure occurs. Inspection ports are for thermal imaging of the conductors, most often they are positioned to allow the joints in the bus to be monitored because these are the hottest points on the bus.

The portable PD monitor is a useful tool to have a quick check of the board immediately on entry to the substation and before beginnning any work.
