SW edge/face highlighting problem

SW edge/face highlighting problem

SW edge/face highlighting problem

(OP)
Hi All,

I resently installed SW 2009 on my Windows 7 64-bit machine and it has an irritating error where it displays the highlighted edge or face etc. some distance above where that edge or face is on the model.  I included the picture below to clarify.  Does anyone now how to fix this frustrating problem?
I had SW 2008 on the same machine but didn't have any problems (I was running Vista 32-bit).

RE: SW edge/face highlighting problem

What graphics card and driver are you using?

Did you update it when upgrading to SW2009?

RE: SW edge/face highlighting problem

Looks graphical to me as well... Video card drivers change everytime you upgrade your machine... no matter how it worked prior to the version before.

Its a Lenovo laptop with onboard video (Intel 965 chipset).  I downloaded the latest driver for it from Lenovo (the Windows 7 64-bit version).  Everything else seems to be displayed correctly.  Are there any tools that I can use to determine whether my graphics is the problem?

RE: SW edge/face highlighting problem

No actual tools really. Just testing on different cards or machines. If you want to upload the part here, there will be plenty of people who would test it for you.

With no files open, if you go to Tools > Options > System Options > Performance you will see that the Use Software OpenGL option is greyed out and check-marked. That signifies the card is not suitable for SW.

RE: SW edge/face highlighting problem

That is your problem I bet... I have never seen an on board graphics card be supported... SW has a list of cards that are supported for Lenovo laptops.

I would venture to say that is your issue.

Just because it worked before, it does not mean it would work for future releases, you might have just been getting lucky...

Kind regards,

So I ended up solving the problem with one big compromise.  When I uninstalled my graphics driver I tested SW and found that the problem I had disappeared.  Of course, my display looked like hell.  So I reinstalled the graphics driver but this time I set it to 16-bit color (ouch).  Now SW is running extremely quickly and the graphics problems are totally gone.  The compromise is that the color is awful.  Fortunately I'm not doing any rendering etc. and, interstingly, colors show up perfectly in FEA simulation solutions.
I'm planning on building a new workstation in a couple months so I'll be sure to get a mean workstation graphics card.  Thanks so much for the pointers!
