Recommendations about speed of Sworks

(OP)
I am running 2007 sp0.0 .   I keep meaning to install sp5, but never get around to it. Anyway. Change a hatch and wait a 1 to 2 minutes. SOmetimes just saving will take forever. It has gotten worse over time and is not to the point of pathetic. its a 3.4 pentiumD with 4 gigs of ram and a quadro FX 1500. Besides something like a virus, is there anything else I can in SW to try to figure this out. I set my image quality to low. I probably need to install sp5, but since I havnt always had this problem, I know its not the version. I also run 2 22" monitors. Any pointer at all will be great.   thanks

RE: Recommendations about speed of Sworks

Double check to ensure you are running the latest approved graphics driver for SolidWorks (not the same as the latest driver).  Make your leap to SP5.

How large of a drawing are we talking, file size and drawing size?

RE: Recommendations about speed of Sworks

TEMP file size might need to be deleted.

Could try and reset your registry and see if you have a corrupt registry causing slow downs.

Make sure your video card driver is correct.

SP5 is probably not going to fix a slow down issue or a slow save, most likely its your machine.

RE: Recommendations about speed of Sworks

I've seen slowdown issues caused on Multi-Screen setups you can try disabling the second screen when running SolidWorks to see if that helps. There are usually notes or icons about this on the supported drivers page.

Some drivers recommend to use the SolidWorks specific settings which can be selected from the List of Cad programs in 3d settings portion of your Nvidia driver settings.

RE: Recommendations about speed of Sworks

FYI Michael - Nvidia was suppose to fix that back in 2008-beginning of 2009 that you would not need to turn Solidworks on in the Nvidia control panel. It was suppose to be set for you automatically.

well.... i went ahead and wiped it out and re-installed and also install SP5. Seems to be better. Creating final assy dwgs are just slow, period. With a new fast computer, is 2010 about the same? Usually the computer is 100 times fater, but the new software version needs 100 times more muscle to run, so it equals out. Does sworks have its own TEMP file or folder?

RE: Recommendations about speed of Sworks

no it uses the windows TEMP... The link I provided gave you the location. If you didn't see it, its because your local settings folder is hidden.

If you reinstalled. did you clean the registry prior? If not, try renaming the registry per the link I provided above and see if that helps.

RE: Recommendations about speed of Sworks

aroundhere,

Head over to my blog at www.solidmuse.com and run the punchholder benchmark.  The link to it is in the right sidebar.  I have a SW2007 file to benchmark.  I have a Google spreadsheet with rebuild times on all kinds of hardware.

You will be able to see how dog slow your computer is compared to new computer hardware.

SW2010 needs a bit more horsepower, but new computer hardware is way faster then what you have now.

aroundhere,

Also there have been improvements in SW2008 and beyond in drawing regens.  Drawings regens are multi-threaded and will use more then one cpu to regen the drawing.
