hello, have exist a table to measure the min required rivet head after sanded for painting?

RE: wear rivets

i typically find this data in the A/C's SRM.

SW2009 Office Pro SP2.1
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU
2.2GHz, 2.00GB RAM
QuadroFX 3700
SpacePilot

RE: wear rivets

why would it be different to allowable thickness removal of adjacent skins ?  but then this may be what yo're asking for, and as posted above, see the SRM.  there may also be references in the MM, under painting.

RE: wear rivets

Be sure to restore the rivet head corrosion protection after sanding.

RE: wear rivets

On second thought, you need to be very careful about sanding/blending around fastener heads.  OEM's don't want you grinding on fasteners.  In a service environment, if you needed to blend around fasteners, you would remove the fastener first, blend and then install an acceptable replacement fastener.

You could very well end up replacing a flush head fastener by doing a local spotface and installing a protruding head fastener.  I've done it, but only after some engineering work.

it's for a Cessna 152, and nothing are in SM or FAA AC 143-13 but thank's for answer

RE: wear rivets

Assumed we're talking about flush rivets.  Go to the fastener specification and find out what the lower tolerance is on the fastener head diameter.

RE: wear rivets

cessna info would have been helpful.

i'd expect to see LZ type rivets ... i don't think these can be shaved (or sanded).  of course if we are talking BJ rivets, then you've got more room to manoeuvre; i'd suggest no more than 0.01" removed.  but who's going to check (each rivet head) ?

RE: wear rivets

the rivets are type AD Head round most of the damaged head are head dia of 2,5 mm. many thank's of all for answer rgds. Thierry

RE: wear rivets

From some old notes:

MIL-HDBK-5H    8.1.2 Solid Rivets......Head height shall be a minimum 0.3 Diameter.

When you work this out on AD rivets, a good field maintenance go/nogo gauge is a common rivet set. Place the appropriate set over the bucked rivet head. If it bottoms out on the head, and doesn't touch the skin, you're ok.

This comes from an old moss-back ex-Airforce sheetmetal man, who started his trade as a youngster in Long Beach, when there was a Douglas Aircraft.

RE: wear rivets

I recall working on Cessna 402 for a small airline.  I don't know what events led up to the requirement, but the FAA inspector made them replace all the rivets if he couldn't read the head markings. Most were AD rivets.

RE: wear rivets

kontiki99, did you mean rivets that the airline installed during operation or did you mean the original Cessna production installed rivets?  I would normally assume you meant the former but with today's FAA (grounding an airplane with Q-tip props comes to mind) I was curious if my assumption is correct.

RE: wear rivets

Kontik99,

I'd tell the ASI to go pound sand if he came up with that mandate!!

Maybe the AD dimple was just filled with paint or Bondo??  What then?

You'd do more damage replacing many 402 rivets than just leaving them alone.
