Backing strip

Hi Members

For a pressure vessel built to ASME Sec VIII, is it allowed if  shell (15mm thk ) circumferential joints with excessive root gaps upto 10 mm  are welded by using temporary backing strips.Normally the excess root gaps are corrected by buttering the bevel ends.Joint detail is is single V with double side welding after back gouging.

Any inputs would be apprciated

RE: Backing strip

Yes, backing for welding is allowed especially for removal to back gouge for full penetration welds.

RE: Backing strip

you may want to consider using ceramic backing
