Solidworks Simulation, applying preload to modeled bolts

Solidworks Simulation, applying preload to modeled bolts

Solidworks Simulation, applying preload to modeled bolts

(OP)
Hi I've got a complcated assembly with long tie-rods, or tension rods, that I need to test with bending and tension, though I need to preload the bolts first. I don't want to use the bolt simulator, as I need to evaluate the stresses in the bolts themselves. I currently only have the static linear solver available with Premium. Is there any means to apply sequence loading with the static solver, or will I need to look into the Professional, with the non-linear solver? I'm also a litte confused as to how to apply a tensile load to the tie-rods, while loading the flanged connections on either side, if anyone out there has some experiance with this and can point me in the right direction. there are nuts at either end, should I have free contacts to the nuts, then tension the bolts, then change contact to bonded to the nuts? Is there a means to shorten the bolts to apply the preload. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

RE: Solidworks Simulation, applying preload to modeled bolts

Bond the bolt head to the mating surface.  Model the nut so that it has a slight interference with the other mating surface and then apply a shrink fit.  You might have to play with the amount of interference in order to get your desired preload.
