AIR CORE SERIES REACTORS

AIR CORE SERIES REACTORS

AIR CORE SERIES REACTORS

(OP)
When 3 single phase reactors are stacked 3 high to make a 3 phase arrangement, then the center phase is reverse wound. This makes the 3 phase ohms slighty higher than the single phase values due to the mutual flux.

My question is when the reactors are located in a row side by side is the center phase also reverse wound?

RE: AIR CORE SERIES REACTORS

hktrial, I do not know whether the center phases are reverse wound or not on either type of arrangement that you mention.

But, I would say that there is no difference whether the reactors are located vertically, horizontally, or at some other angle. If they are close enough to have mutual inductance, the effect is the same.

RE: AIR CORE SERIES REACTORS

hktrial-

When reactors are stacked, the center-phase reactor is reverse-wound for mechanical stress reasons when the reactors are exposed to short-circuit current forces.

This makes the reactors "pull together" instead of "pulling apart", since the compression strength is higher than the tensile strength, both for the reactor coil and the insulators.

When in a non-stacked, side-by-side, or triangle configuration, no such concern on compression forces exist, so there is no need to alter the winding direction of the center phase.
