How to calculate/predict erosion loss
How to calculate/predict erosion loss
(OP)
I need to predict remaining life or time of failure for a plate that is subjected to a perpendicular liquid force (water) with a velocity of 6.13 m/s. The plate material is 13 Cr and thickness is 1.38".
How long does it take for the plate to thin out and perforate at the given 6.13 m/s liquid velocity?
I tried googling (heheh, :)) for a simplified way to calculate (something like ballpark figure or rule of thumb) this but found out that "simplified" doesn't mean "simple".
Tips and suggestions are always appreciated.

RE: How to calculate/predict erosion loss
I think you will find that predicting erosion is similar to predicting women.........near on impossible........
You have given a velocity (is this the velocity it hits the plate at?), but major considerations as well are temperature and pressure, surface finish, angle of impact etc play a key role as well. You will also need to consider over what area it is hitting the plate ie have you a narrow jet impacting on one part of the plate, or is the whole plate getting hit at the same time with the same force..............
There are laboratory tests for this, but even they are subjective. From my own experience erosion is a suck it and see phenomenon. If the current plate lasts six months, everything staying the same, the next plate will probably last six months..............

http
but i don't know if they are applicable in your case.
another model is the API RP 14E.
