Review / Approve Welding Procedures

Review / Approve Welding Procedures

Review / Approve Welding Procedures

(OP)
I am trying to learn the ins and outs of reviewing and approving welding procedures. I have many codes and standards readily available so that is not a problem. I was wondering if there are any specific instructions on reviewing procedures? Any help that can be offered will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

RE: Review / Approve Welding Procedures

Make sure that all variables are per Sect IX

thickness covers what's being welded

proper wire/rod/flux is being used

make sure the heat treatment is correct

make sure has charpy impact if required

make sure correct P no's are used

Tensiles are good

Now that the main ones.  The welding gurus will come in and say that all Classifications are right, transfer is correct, amps and volts are reasonable, preheat and interpass is reasonable, total heat input is reasonable.

all that technical stuff

RE: Review / Approve Welding Procedures

I would suggest checking out the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors web site and look for classes offered on boiler and pressure vessel welding. It is an excellent course that help you for this job.

RE: Review / Approve Welding Procedures

In addition to the above recommendations, reviews of welding procedures are governed by the Codes of contruction; eg, ASME I, VIII, IX, B31,1, B31.3, etc. and the Engineering Specificattions. The review must assure that the WPS is properly supported by it PQR and meets all contract requirements. Finally the WPS must apply to the item being welded.

Over the past 36 years, I have reviewed thousands of procedures, some were not properly qualified, some did not reflect the Code essential or non essential variable requirements, some were fraudulent, some did not apply to the item to be welded, some used processes or filler metals that were prohibited under the Contract, some did not meet the additional requirement of the design Code or testing requirements of the Contract.  Most were acceptable.

When rejecting a procedure, it is advised to site the reason for rejection under the Code and/or Contract.
