Exterior Tube Columns

Exterior Tube Columns

Exterior Tube Columns

(OP)
Wanted to get input from other engineers on exposed exterior tube column base details.  In particular how do you handle base details when they are below grade.  My concern is that water will at some point find it's way into the column and there won't be a way out as the base of the column is below the concrete around it.

Is there a typical detail that you have seen or used that provides protection from this?

RE: Exterior Tube Columns

Normally I would treat as inner space if in the building. If of necessity needs to be such way exposed one can waterproof to some level, then silicon may be used for final details; the particularities may vary with the case and possibilities but the idea is not let the water get in.

RE: Exterior Tube Columns

What I have done in the past is provide a concrete pedestal around the base plate to prevent moisture intrusion.

RE: Exterior Tube Columns

If you really need the base plate below the surface, drill drain holes above grade and fill tube with grout below this level.

Another idea is to shop cut the tube above grade and shop weld a plate at this level with drain holes in the upper tube slightly above this level. Grout lower tube solid.
