Looking for input to repair some damaged flanges on raised face gasket serrations to have a 125-250 RMS finish per ASME B16.5

RE: damange flanges

I've had machine shops build up the area in question with welding, then re-machine the faces to specification.

RE: damange flanges

Depending on the extent of the damage and how much over the minimum B16.5 dimensional requirements the flange is, you may be able to just machine back the face rather then use weld buildup. Again it depends on the oversize of the flange thickness.

RE: damange flanges

Also if you look at the controlled dimension in ASME B16.5 the important dimension is Tf, defined as a minimum. For raised face flanges Note 2 is applicable wich states that "These flanges may be supplied with a flat face. The flat face may be either the full tf dimension thickness plus 0.06 in. or the tf dimension thickness without the raised face height. See para. 6.3.2 for additional restrictions." (from ASME B16.5 2003)

This means you can safly machine back dammaged serations on a raised face flange until the raised face is no less the 0.06 inch proud of the Tf dimensioned face. This gives you a lot of room to machine back before flange itegrity becomes a concers as most flanges have a 0.25 inch raised face.

Hope this helps
