Interchange Crossroad Signing

Interchange Crossroad Signing

Interchange Crossroad Signing

(OP)
Currently working on an interstate reconstruction project and includes replacement and updating of all crossroad signing at the interchanges.

The MUTCD gives the signing layout appropriate for a single travel lane crossroad on an Intermediate Class interchange. So I know what signing needs to be inplace, however the MUTCD does not state whether the lettering and symbol sizes should be per Chapter 2E or per Chapter 2D since it is a conventional crossroad.

A few details, the interchange is classified as Intermediate on a Freeway and the crossroad is a two lane county highway.  The signing layout should be per the MUTCD 2003 Figure 2E-34. Current signing consists of entrance direction signs and directional assemblies.  The existing signs don't conform to one or the other chapter and appear to be a mix of the two.

My current train of thought is to size the signs per Chapter 2E since the interchange and ramps are freeway.

What is everyone's thought on which standard should apply?

RE: Interchange Crossroad Signing

I would use Chapter 2E for signs on the freeway and ramps, and 2D for any signs on the surface road.

Did you know there is an MUTCD forum on the FHWA website? http://knowledge.fhwa.dot.gov/cops/opspublic.nsf/home?openform
