PDMWorks quantity question

PDMWorks quantity question

PDMWorks quantity question

(OP)
Hello all,
I am new to PDMWorks and was wondering if there is a way to have a specific part in the assembly show up as quantity "0" or "AR", etc on the drawing?  For us, the part is Loctite.  We need it called on the BOM so we add a "tag" in the assembly and hide it.  However, on the drawing it adds up all the tags and puts that number in the quantity column.

Thanks in advance.
BB

RE: PDMWorks quantity question

BodyBagger,

I don't have the Help or What's New for SWX 2010 to reference, but at the rollout last week our VAR demonstrated Virtual Parts which specifically addresses this sort of thing.  This is different from the Virtual Components described in SWX 09's Help.  Perhaps this new functionality is just what you are looking for.

Updraft,

I've played with the functionality and it is exactly what they are looking for. Provided you're will to roll out a 0.0 in a production environment. Haven't seen too many people with the nerve for that.

Thanks to all for the ideas.  The virtual component in SW09 ALMOST does it.  The only thing missing still is if I keep the virtual component in the assy only (no external file) I can not seem to give it any properties.  In the BOM the description field is blank and we do not want to manually edit the field.  Anyone know how to assign properties to the virtual component while not saving it to an external file?

RE: PDMWorks quantity question

Open the part and enter it's custom properties. I've never had a problem giving a virtual component custom properties before.

RE: PDMWorks quantity question

The BOM is bi-directional. i.e. If you modify the BOM description, it will be propagated to the part.

When I open the BOM (excel driven BOM) and change the quantity from 1 to 0 and exit it actually deletes the line from the BOM.  :(

RE: PDMWorks quantity question

Well that makes a certain amount of sense. If there is no qty of a part on a job why include it in the BOM?

Hi DekkerDesign,
The reason it is done this way is because this is the only way the assemblers know to pull it (Loctite) and add it to the job.  For inventory, it is not counted but this is the only way for them to get it called on the pick list.  Even though it is not measured or inventoried it still needs to be added to the parts.

That is exactly the reason we quit using excel BOM's a few years back.

We created a SolidWorks property called UoM.
Our BOM equation is:
{2}IF('UoM'="EA";'QTY';IF('UoM'="FT";('Length'/12)" FT";IF('UoM'="LGE";('Length');IF('UoM'="NA";"0";'QTY'))))
