Low Volume/High Pressure Spring Hydraulic Accumulator

Low Volume/High Pressure Spring Hydraulic Accumulator

Low Volume/High Pressure Spring Hydraulic Accumulator

(OP)
Hi guys, I'm not a hydraulics guy by any stretch, so please forgive me if this is a fundamentally dumb question.  I'm working on a concept that requires (ideally) the use of a spring-loaded (floating) piston type hydraulic accumulator with a capacity in the 50cc-75cc range and pressure capability up to ~1500psi.

My application specifically benefits from the use of a mechanical spring to allow manipulation of the pressure/displacement curve, so that's a must-have.  I've searched the web quite a bit, but haven't found the right company/product yet.  Seems the bladder type accumulators are more popular, and any piston-types that I've found use compressed gas for the spring.  I may be able to modify something like that for my use, but would prefer an off-the-shelf part.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,
  Mikah B.

RE: Low Volume/High Pressure Spring Hydraulic Accumulator

Designing a spring type accumulator can be challenging because of spring rates verses bore diameter. To design an accumulator you need to provide the pressure rise allowable over the volume change. 50cc of volume with a 100 psi pressure rise is much more difficult than 50cc with a 1000 psi pressure rise. Sometime disk springs are better than coil for this type of product. It may be possible to modify a piston type accumulator to fit your needs.

Thanks Ed, I was beginning to wonder if my post was in invisible pixels. :)

I was hoping to find a selection of existing spring-type accumulators where I could select the bore that would be the best fit for my prototype (~1.125").  At this stage, I'm just looking for parts that are close enough to put together a proof-of-concept model, if it flies and we build them commercially, we'll end up having to either make or buy custom parts to make it work right.

Anyway, thanks for your input and still hoping somebody can steer me towards a spring accumulator supplier!

I don't know of an off shelf spring accumulator manufacture. You may be able to modify a hydraulic cylinder to do your testing.

We can provide additional help if you contact us outside the forum.

Could you work with brake system valve like this one.

We had some accumulators that looked like shock absorbers with an external accumulator.  I can't recall the name on the components.

Thanks Syd for the links - but my system is very simple and I need a device that increases pressure as I push volume into it, and relieves that pressure as the volume flows out - an accumulator!  I may end up just using some cylinders for the prototype as suggested above, but they are quite bulky for what I'm doing.

Thanks for the help, fellas.
