This depends on the solenoid manufacturer, type, and the distance the solenoid plunger is pulled out from the coil.  

I believe the general rule of thumb is the pulling force applied by the plunger varies loosly with the square of the distance the plunger is pulled out from the coil.

Not loosly but inversely.

Thank-you Bill for the correction.

Richard, I have only used a solenoid in 1 project.  Here is the datasheet for the one I used to give you an idea of what forces you can expect.  The manufacturer also has other solenoid types with different characteristics.  You can get the datasheets from their website.
