CT saturation in protection

CT saturation in protection

CT saturation in protection

(OP)
which protection is more affected by CT saturation ? Any good literature with explanation ? Which is more sensitive to CT saturation ?

RE: CT saturation in protection

Any protection that has to work when the CT saturates (i.e. when there is a fault).

The most common problem is with current differential protection. In this case, a small mismatch in the saturation characteristics of the CT's can cause nuisance tripping.

This GE/Multilin white paper discusses CT saturation for certain applications.

If you check the SEL website (www.selinc.com) you will find some additional tech papers on CT performance.

If you're REALLY interested, check J.L. Blackburn's Protective Relaying book for a good discussion of CTs and relays.

If you're REALLY, REALLY interested, Stan Zocholl of SEL has published a book on Current Transformers.
