Thread length per UG34(q)

(OP)
Someone has suggested that the length of thread shown in Sect.VIII Div 1, UG34(q), must be as long as the calculated thickness of the end cap.  This is based upon the sketch (q).  My argument is that sketch (n) shows a retaining ring with a thread length less than the thickness of the end cap.  In addition, the text addresses the issue of thread strength separately from end cap thickness.  Has anyone come across this issue before?  If so, how have you calculated the required length of thread?
