Heat treatment

Heat treatment

(OP)
I have a question regarding heat treatment of steel casting.

Is it acceptable/ok if a 9 hrs heat treatment chart shows an interruption - lets say 10 minutes?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Heat treatment

Please comeback with more details.

What is the material?

What part of the heat treatment was interrupted?

RE: Heat treatment

Assume 9 hours to be soaking times. A 10 minute interruption, might cause a drop in temperature of few 10's of degrees. Practically should not be a major cause of concern.

Sorry for not reponse quickly.

The material is ASTM A487 Gr 10 Cl B.

Thanks all.

RE: Heat treatment

zhin,

You should indicate your heat treatment temperature and the variations in your specific case...

RE: Heat treatment

zhlin,
I have the spec with me,which specifies the austenitizing temperature as 1550F(845C), liquid media quenched to below 500F(260C) and then tempered at 1100F(595C).

Why have you gone for such a long austenitizing cycle ( I am assuming,as you have not mentioned)?

Learn the rules,so you know how to break them properly.

Dalai,

The part is 8", which was the heat treat time came from, I think.

Yah, per the spec, it should be cooled at liquid and then have temper per the spec.

So I am going to dig up more information.

Thank you!

K

RE: Heat treatment

The applicable AMS specifications discuss cycle interrruptions.  Usually the are allowed if they are minor and your Quality System has a procedure for handling them.
