HSS beam to Wide flange column web connection HSS beam to Wide flange column web connection mystruct (Structural) (OP) 24 Oct 09 20:45 I need to design a HSS beam to Wide flange column connection. Beam frames in to the web of the column. It is a shear connection. Any suggestions for the type of connections that can be used.Thanks. RE: HSS beam to Wide flange column web connection asixth (Structural) 24 Oct 09 22:53 Here's an idea. Of course you will need to go through the calculations and satisfy yourself that the forces can be transferred adequatley. http://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=dbaf0067-978c-4c85-9837-09 RE: HSS beam to Wide flange column web connection jike (Structural) 11 Nov 09 13:51 I think the simplest is to have an end plate on the tube that bolts to the web. If you will have difficulty erecting the tube (between the flanges) then I would weld a flat plate across the column flanges to mate with end plate on the tube. RE: HSS beam to Wide flange column web connection IJR (Structural) 19 Nov 09 06:37 Just for the sake of discussion mystruct, I think detail by asixth is also cool, and if you remove his stiffeners(top and bottom plates) it becomes a simple shear tab. You can check if stiffeners are necessary or not by simple check(see blodgett)Shear tabs eliminate drilling into the webs of columns and can be used when beams frame from both sides of the column web. And there will be a lot of maneuvering space during erection workrespectsijr RE: HSS beam to Wide flange column web connection connectegr (Structural) 16 Mar 10 21:11 Just FYI. A standard shear tab to a column web is difficult to erect. Especially if framing column web to column web. An extended single plate is easier to erect. Design is required for the eccentricity. The end plate connect is easier and cheaper to fabricate. But creates a fixed connection.
