Historic Building - Concrete "Class"

Historic Building - Concrete "Class"

Historic Building - Concrete "Class"

(OP)
I am evaluating a building designed in 1944 with an addition in 1955.  The drawings claim "Concrete Class D" and "Concrete Class D1", and 2500 psi, and that is the extent of information given about the concrete.  What do the classes represent?  I'm trying to determine approx. concrete density.

RE: Historic Building - Concrete "Class"

Sometimes engineers or architects will use aspects of the state DOT specifications and refer to their DOT concrete classes, etc.  That might be the case.

RE: Historic Building - Concrete "Class"

I have "Handbook of Concrete Construction" eigth edition 1943 . I can't find mention of classes and strengths are not here either. They just give mixtures for various applications.

RE: Historic Building - Concrete "Class"

JAE's right...."classes" of concrete are generally DOT requirements.  Take a few cores to determine in-situ strength.  Density can be obtained from the cores.

RE: Historic Building - Concrete "Class"

What State are you in? Someone here can probably look it up for you.

If you need just 2500 psi to get it to work you probably will easily have it.

It's in Maryland.

3 classes actually: Class C, Class D, and Class D1
