1000 DEG F on CS A53 Pipe

1000 DEG F on CS A53 Pipe

(OP)
Is it acceptable to use A53 CS pipe for a generator exhaust at approx. 1000 F or some type of alloy has to be used?
Thank you

RE: 1000 DEG F on CS A53 Pipe

It depends on how long you want the exhaust pipe to last and the thickness of the pipe. Carbon steel exhausts used to be the rule but short life expectancy was expected. For longer serviceslife, type 409 ferritic stainless steel is often used.

Well it was originally schedule 40. However, they installed schedule 10 and I was asked to verify the stresses at the supports for the new thickness. Schedule 10 fails and stiffening is required. B31.1 does not even show an allowable for that temperature. Is there any other source that we can use to detemrine the allowable if any left at that temperature?

Thank you

RE: 1000 DEG F on CS A53 Pipe

On engine exhausts, it's always Carbon steel with an expansion joint.

RE: 1000 DEG F on CS A53 Pipe

dcasto.....

Carbon steel will last for a while.....

But engine exhausts are subject to internal/external corrosion as well as high temperatures.

Check the exhaust system under your vehicle.....

Its probably 430 or 316 Stainless steel

Sigma,

B31.3 does not prohibit the use of A53-B at 1000°, but the allowable drops to 2.5ksi.

You can also look in Section II Part D.

Steve Perry...

You should have stayed with Journey....

ASME B31.3 discourages use of carbon steel above 800F through use of a "single bar" in the Basic Material Allowable table.

The bar refers to a note at the end of the table.

"Dont stop Beliveing" that the Code discourages this kind of high temperature usage...

RE: 1000 DEG F on CS A53 Pipe

Right of a single bar falls under the discourage category.  Right of a double bar is prohibited.

B31.3-2006 is all I have handy, and it's just a single bar at 800 with no double bar to be found.

So, I still stand by my "does not prohibit" statement.

If sigma needs anything more comprehensive than a hint to go look at B31.3 or Sec2... well, a free message board probably isn't the place to get it.  Even us burned out rock stars turned engineers need some business nowadays.
