3D Electromagnetic FEA Solutions
3D Electromagnetic FEA Solutions
(OP)
Hi
I am currently reviewing 3D Electromagnetic FEA packages based on technical and commercial offers.
The companies/solutions I have selected for the moment are:
- CEDRAT / FLUX3D
- VECTOR FIELDS / OPERA3D
- JRI / JMAG
- ELECTROMAGNETIC WORKS / EMS
- INFOLYTICA / MAGNET3D
I would like to reduce this list to 2/3 names.
Could you tell me if you know these packages, their advantages / disadvantages?
Do you have any information/reference that could help me in making the right decision?
FYI our range of products goes from 0-1MVA / LV / 0-500kHz / only dry components / often with forced air cooling systems / passive electromagnetic components. We are often dealing with high harmonics contents wave forms (current/voltage).
Thank you in advance for your help.

RE: 3D Electromagnetic FEA Solutions
Could you let me know the weblinks to JRI/JMAG? I maintain an FAQ list in this forum of weblinks to many magnetics analysis software and I'd like to update it. I couldn't find it via Google.

RE: 3D Electromagnetic FEA Solutions
I have used Flux3D for about 15 years or more. I have used Integrated Engineering Software and Infolytica, but it has been over 20 years ago. All have made considerable improvements in capabilities and ease of use. All of the leading FEA software has the capabilities you want. Some you will have to purchase the modules you require instead of one package. I have found Flux3D (and Flux2D) to be both full featured and accurate with the results. Of course the results are quite dependent on the person doing the modeling. When it come to ease of use, that somewhat depends on the individual. I will say that you should be very careful when you do decide, because they are all expensive enough that you will not want to switch.

RE: 3D Electromagnetic FEA Solutions
We have just bought the Flux3D to used in a R&D Project to assess electromagnetic forces in a transformer caused by the inrush current and through short-circuit currents.
We also intend to study how we can assess the transformer loss of life due to winding displacements caused by these currents.
Do you have experience in doing this kind of study with this software?
We know that it is possible to represent the ferromanetic core hysteresis loop in the Flux3D to assess core losses. However, the vendor told us that the magnetizing current waveform will appear without distortion when applying a sine wave voltage on the wind wound the core. This is not correct.
Do you have any experience with transformer models in Flux3d using the hysteresis loop?
Best regards,

RE: 3D Electromagnetic FEA Solutions
I do not have personal experience with transformer models using the hysteresis loop. All of my experience is in motor design (brushed and brushless PMDC, switched reluctance, step motor, etc.) I seem to remember studies presented in user group meetings that address transformer design and the effect of winding placements. I have asked my support group (Magsoft) for some help.
RE: 3D Electromagnetic FEA Solutions
I would appreciate very much some help in this matter.
Best regards,
