Pack and Go problem when using Copy Settings Wizard

Pack and Go problem when using Copy Settings Wizard

Pack and Go problem when using Copy Settings Wizard

(OP)
We are having a problem with Pack and Go not working on our other machines.  It works on my machine and we have used the Copy Settings Wizard (CSW) to configure all our installations the same as my machine.

To get P&G to work on the other machines we have had to do the following:
1. Create a new CSW file from my machine that copies all except the System Options.
2. On the "broken" machines go to C:\Program Files\CommonFiles\SolidWorks Shared and rename SwDocumentMgr.dll to something else such as SwDocumentMgr-xx.dll
3. Go to RUN and type "regedit"... then go to KEY_Current_User\Software\Solidworks.   Select Solidworks, hit the F2 key and rename it to Solidworks-old.   This will save your old setting and create a new reg key when SW is started up next.
4. Start SWX then rename the file from step 2 back to SwDocumentMgr.dll
5. Close SWX then run Copy Settings Wizard to restore your menu preferences and toolbars using the CSW file created in step 1.
6. Verify that Pack and Go works.

While I am willing to do this on our computers I do have a few problems with it:
a)    It is aggravating to have to do this, but we'll get over it if it solves the problem.
b)    We lose the System Options and it is a PITA to manually set all these on each machine.

We are running SWX09 with SP 4.0 and 4.1.  All machines are virtually identical with all other hardware and system settings.  We looked into the repair installation, but there is nothing to repair.

We are convinced the problem lies with the CSW System Options transfer.

Does anyone have any experience with this sort of problem and how to resolve it?

Thanks in advance!

RE: Pack and Go problem when using Copy Settings Wizard

If the CSW isn't working correctly, use the regedit > File > Export to make a copy of the relevant registry section on each machine after each has been fixed. That way if anything goes awry, all that is needed is to double-click the .reg file to restore the working settings.

CBL,

Thanks for the input.  I don't know that CSW isn't working correctly.  When we run the full CSW file, copying all sections including Sys Options, everyone's machines have all the same settings and are pointed to the same network directories, etc., just as one would expect.

We just recently discoverd there is a problem with the Pack and Go.  In the suggested steps from the VAR we got P&G functionality back, but it reset all the menus, toolbars, system settings, etc. to defaults.  We then reran our CSW to get all the same settings only to discover that now P&G doesn't work.  In our investigation so far we have tracked it to the copying of the System Options of the CSW.  I wonder if there is something in there that is machine-specific or even user-id specific.

I have never tried what you are suggesting and am not sure I understand all that is involved.  Is this a big job with a lot of .reg files to manage?  I'll try anything.

RE: Pack and Go problem when using Copy Settings Wizard

It is very easy and only need involve one file, although you could create separate reg files for all the 'sub-directory' keys if the need arose.

The main or top-level key is HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/SolidWorks. Just select it by a single-click and use the regedit's File > Export function to create the .reg file.

RE: Pack and Go problem when using Copy Settings Wizard

Solid Works aves the settings files as .sldreg whiuch causes the CSW to launch when double clicking the file you can just remove the .sld and leave .reg as extension to avoid the Wizard.

Pack and Go problems usually occur when older SolidWorks explorer or SPs are on the machines. Make sure everyone is using the latest SolidWorks Explorer or has it installed.

RE: Pack and Go problem when using Copy Settings Wizard

Most of you probably know this but I just started using it  it last week.

You can select the Favorites menu and Add a location to a list of frequently accessed registry keys
I learned this from my brother last week in New York

I always save a copy settings file when SolidWorks is in session and one after closing. SolidWorks gives the warning because most times it looses some of the customizations.

-- now for a Rant ranking 3/10 banghead, 10 being angry and super resentful--

If only they can go the way of Pro/E and allow settings to be saved out and brought in from the Customize or System Options or have something more like the NX Roles that allow you to switch settings for more than SolidWorks's 3 check boxes for Consumer, Mold, or Machine Design industry options/toolbars which seems like a relic of the past.

In fact most other programs use Text files. USER_ENV config.pro etc. to store the settings so you don't need to be a power user to install or customize your screen.

If you could customize the Command Manager or Shortcut Bar to have different preset toolbars/icon sets linked to a customizable dialog box within Customize I'm all for it.
